Vampira

Vampira
Acrylic on Canvas
Winter, 2009

This portrait was created from a photograph which originally appeared in a magazine spread. Maila (Vampira) had recently been involved in a fiery beauty parlour mishap, which left her almost completely bald! Time and again, the iconic star proved that there was much beauty to be found in the untraditional.

Much to the chagrin of my living room wall (this portrait's temporary home), the piece was a gift for Karswell of The Horrors of it All. What do you get for a man who already has everything one could imagine? You hand-craft something, and pray to the gods that it turns out!

As some of you may know, Karswell had become quite close with Ms. Nurmi during his time in Los Angeles. I couldn't think of a more appropriate gift than a heartfelt momento created in the likeness of one of his most cherished companions.

Claws of Horror [1954]

Gather 'round the fire (okay, so it's a lighter), and familiarize yourselves with the LeClaw family secret: humanoid vampire cats!!! The dashing American explorer could never have anticipated the fur-raising fate that awaited him when he wished to be bound by love to Grandmother Elise "forever."

CLAWS OF HORROR was plucked from Horrific #9, published way back in 1952. Killer Kittens was able to post this classic romantic spine-chiller thanks to the always-generous longboxes of Karswell -- Host Utmost of the Rondo-nominated The Horrors of it All. From now until February 22, THOIA is serving up tales from the Horrific series, so git on over while the eatins are still warm! Why not begin the meal with A GLIMPSE OF THE PIT?

The Goal is Death (1974)

In celebration of a hard-earned Saturday night, also known as Hockey Night in Canada to millions of airhorn-blowing fans, your feline hostess has acquired yet another treat from the haunted longboxes over at The Horrors of it All! Feast your eyes on Vicente Alcazar's arena-chiller, THE GOAL IS DEATH, which appeared in Sorcery No. 9 (1974).

Go on, pull your neighbour's sweater over his head before you begin punching him furiously, then become acquainted with Baron Torak, a lonely vampire who comes to find the love and acceptance he has always craved somewhere between center ice and the blue line.

Curtsies to Steve for this penalty-killing classic, and also for the excellent Evil Hockey Night in Canada graphic!
