I am definitely more partial to their earlier material (has a bit of a psychedelic/almost-glam feel to it). They took a bit of a weird turn toward the 80's: think David Bowie's zoot suit years, minus the David Bowie factor ;o)
Worth a listen -- YouTube has a whack of their stuff.
As for King Diamond... he has always ruled, continuing his reign to this day.
